Two things to check before you buy a Server licence.
1. Client Access Licences (CALs) are separate. Windows Server is licensed in two parts: the server licence (this product) and one CAL per user or per device that connects to it. CALs are not included here and are not optional under Microsoft's licensing terms.
2. Support dates. Mainstream support for Windows Server 2022 ends on 13 October 2026; extended support (security updates only) runs to 14 October 2031. For a new deployment intended to last, consider Windows Server 2025 — contact us for a quote.

How Windows Server licensing actually works
This trips up most first-time buyers, so here it is plainly:
- Licensing is per physical core. Microsoft's rules require a minimum of 8 cores per physical processor and a minimum of 16 cores per server, whatever the actual core count. A server with two 8-core CPUs needs 16 core licences.
- CALs are required on top. Every user or device that connects to the server needs a Client Access Licence. You choose User CALs (one per person, any number of devices) or Device CALs (one per machine, any number of users) — whichever is cheaper for your situation. A team of 12 people sharing 5 shift workstations is cheaper with Device CALs; 5 people each with a laptop, phone and desktop is cheaper with User CALs.
- Standard covers 2 virtual machines. Each licence entitles you to run two OS environments under Hyper-V. If you need more, either license the server again or move to Datacenter, which allows unlimited VMs.

Standard or Datacenter?
Standard is right for most SMEs: a physical server running a couple of virtual machines. Datacenter makes sense only in heavily virtualised environments — unlimited VMs, plus Storage Spaces Direct and Software-Defined Networking. If you are running fewer than three VMs, Standard is the correct and cheaper choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Client Access Licences as well?
Yes. Under Microsoft's licensing terms, every user or device that connects to a Windows Server needs a CAL, in addition to the server licence itself. CALs are not included with this product. You can choose User CALs (one per person, unlimited devices) or Device CALs (one per machine, unlimited users) depending on which is cheaper for your setup. A CAL must also be the same version as the server or newer — Server 2022 requires 2022 CALs.
How many cores does my server need licensing for?
Windows Server 2022 is licensed per physical core, with a minimum of 8 cores per processor and 16 cores per server. Even a single-socket server with 4 cores must be licensed for 16. Count the physical cores across all populated sockets, then apply the minimum.
When does Windows Server 2022 stop being supported?
Mainstream support ends on 13 October 2026 and extended support runs to 14 October 2031. During extended support you continue to receive security updates but no new features and no non-security fixes. For a deployment expected to run past 2031, Windows Server 2025 is the better starting point.
What is the difference between Standard and Datacenter?
Standard allows two virtualised OS environments per licence. Datacenter allows unlimited virtual machines and adds Storage Spaces Direct and Software-Defined Networking. For most small and medium businesses running one or two VMs, Standard is both sufficient and considerably cheaper.
Does Windows Server 2022 Standard include Hyper-V?
Yes, including Live Migration and Hyper-V Replica. Remember the two-VM entitlement: running a third virtual machine requires an additional licence or a move to Datacenter.
